Mixed Media Monday: Marriage Joys!

Hi everyone!

Back with two quick mixed media projects! The first is a card I made. Marriage is a wonderful Insitution....but who wants to live in an institution? (This quote is by Groucho Marx). I made this card several years ago, when I fell in love with antique photos and was collecting them like mad from every avenue I could find!

(inside: but who wants to live in an institution?)

The next is an altered matchbox--complete with your very own Pocket Husband--now this would be quite handy if I do say so myself. You simply keep your key handy and pop him out whenever you need him. The best part? He says Yes Dear to every request! lol!

I hope you are all having a WONDERFUL Monday today! I'll be back tomorrow with a great tutorial! I have a class to teach tonight in Orange Park at Scrap and Stuff on the Cricut Expression--and a telephone conference with my publisher today--so it's a GRAND busy day!

All the best,
KAndrew

What a busy weekend!

Hi everyone! What a busy weekend--we left Thursday to drive about 6.5 hours to NWF for my son's heart appt on Friday. Then Friday we drove another hour to get there, spent the day having tests run and meeting with the doctor. Then we rested, and traveled home today! But guess what  my dear creative friends? We received a wonderful report! Jasper's heart is in stable condition, and we will travel back again in 6 mths for another checkup and 12 months for a MRI!
Thank you to all of you who have prayed for my dear son Jasper! He has went thru 19 surgeries in his life, and is doing well! Thank you!
I'm a bit groggy--from everything. I think it's the LETDOWN affect--you know how that goes. You have so much on you, and then when it's over and you get the good news, you let down! WHIPPEE!
I'll be back on tomorrow for another tutorial and fun project!

Any Artists out there using my Files???

hello all my creative friends and bloggers! I've started a new link list on the left hand side of my blog that features artists that month who have used any of my cut files, other than the challenge! If you've used one, please email me at kristalstamper@yahoo.com so I can add you!

Let Go of the Ghosts-Personal Rambling

I thought I would post an ATC I did a couple of years ago. I actually drew this tree using solvent inks, and then alcohol inks for the backgrounds. I am often asked, how do you even think of things like that? Where does your inspiration come from? The truth? I really don't know--it just "comes" to me. It's almost like when you know you are hungry--and what you want to eat. I know I must create, and it just happens and flows on the paper. I don't have to think it out or make a plan.
I've come to the realization that being eccentric is okay. So today I'm letting go of the "old ghosts", the ones who worry me and say... "you are so different than other people" "Your son is so different--so eccentric. My son has Aspergers. Last night was the Orientation at school, and nothing makes you cringe and feel judged as when you are always "called out" on your child. My child or I will never be the popular "it" people. We care more about helping others, than trying to be something we are not. I'm tired of trying to conform him to a mold he will never fit well in. My son will be friends with anyone, he doesn't even notice clothing or name brands, and he doesn't make fun of others. However, it appears that is what it takes to be popular. Popular by whose standards. What is normal?
Today, I'm okay with that. Yes I'm eccentric, but I am also passionate, artistic, caring, and a HUGE humanitarian who would give my last dollar or shirt off my back to one that needed it. I use my life for His purpose--and I'm okay with being different. I'm also okay with my son being different. We need more Einsteins & Van Goghs--who are passionate and not quite worried about fitting in and being "normal".
As Temple Grandin says, I'm different---not less.

All the best,
Kandrew

Tutorial: How to make an SVG from an Image using Inkscape

MAKE YOUR OWN SVG USING AUTOTRACE
First of all, please let me state that I do not trace any of my cutting files--I draw them all..which takes many hours of work. However, when people are new to the SCAL or MTC program, they often start out by tracing images to create SVG files, or they purchase them from designers.
I've had quite a few people ask me to create a tutorial on how to do this, and I am thrilled to be able to help you. I love to teach and share my knowledge. It's the way God uses me on this Earth.
I own both MTC  and SCAL. However, I prefer to use SCAL to cut all my files, as it's just my personal preference. I like to use Inkscape, a FREE program to create/edit my svgs. Then I import them into my cutting file program (scal/mtc) to cut directly to my cricut.
You can also trace directly into SCAL and MTC. This first video is HOW to trace in Inkscape, and save as an SVG.  Them import that svg into your SCAL.
Please remember that you must always use a Copyright Free, Royalty Free, image that is in the public domain if you wish to publish this on your blog, a site, or share with others. I do not want any of you to get into legal trouble for taking someone's coloring page, image, etc and making it into a cut file. This does happen, and I wouldn't want this to happen to anyone. So please please make sure you only get copyright free, royalty free, public domain images or coloring book pages. It's not fair to the artist or anyone else, especially you to get into legal trouble.
With that said, you will also end up with many pieces, and lots of nodes. The more nodes you have, the more bumps/jagged edges--the less, the smoother it will cut. So if you want a beautiful file, I suggest drawing it yourself, or editing your paths to remove some nodes making it cut nicer, welding pieces together using path union, and doing some cleaning and editing on any traced image.
I hope this helps some of you! Enjoy!

Mixed Media Monday: Part One

Gypsy Circle

Okay as some of you know, I started out as a Mixed Media artist.. I taught at little stamp and scrapbook stores around the Seattle area. I was published in Somerset Studio. I still make collage canvases and decorations for my home..which is completely decorated in an old world French style.
However once starting scrapbooking, paper piecing became the mainly dominate craft I was blogging about. Yet I'm still quite active personally doing mixed media--it's just mostly for my home or classes I teach.
I thought I would do a Mixed Media monday and share some of my personal artwork I do for myself and my home, and sometimes classes I teach. My nickname was Gypsy and many called me the Scrappin' Gypsy. I had my own company that I sold via online called Eye Candy Originals, and mostly sold rare and hard to find supplies for mixed media. I also had an in-home studio in which I taught many weekend retreats.
The first project I'm going to show you each Monday is a project from the "Gypsy Wagon's Past", and most of my artwork if not all sold online or at art shows. The first one I'm going to show you today is called
Gypsy Circle. Personally, I'm a true gypsy at heart!

Let me know what you think about my Gypsy Circle book--the inside pages are as decorated as the outside ones, but out of courtesy to the indvidual who purchased my book, I'm only giving you a peek!

Come back this  afternoon for Part Two of Mixed Media monday, where I'll be "mixing up some media" for a great tutorial and project!

All the best,
Kandrew

Tutorial: Quick Project: Game On! 3 Layouts in 1 Hr

Hi everyone! This month I'm one of the three designers whose work is featured in the August Grab Bag at VDBC. My part of the grab bag is video gaming! I decided to use the paper piecings I created on three super fast layouts--3 layouts in one hour!
Beware--there are a few falling ribbon bows. Note...zots do not hold on grosgrain ribbon. You must use something stronger-- lol
Enjoy! If you enjoyed the video, and can find a minute to leave a comment, I'll enter you in the drawing for the Free Cricut cart!
If you are interested in these cut files for your digital cutter, hop over to VDBC.

NOTE: I tried out a new video software and I did NOT like it for this video--it appears fuzzy and the time per frame is not fast enough, so it has me blurring alot! don't worry, I'll be back to my original software for the next video! I'm trying to find a good one--so if you know of one, drop me a line!

Tutorial: Drawing Faces with Your Cricut

ORANGE YOU SWEET!

Hi ya'll--my dear creative blog friends!!  I'm back with a quick project and tutorial....showing you how you can DRAW faces on your paper piecings/diecuts with your cricut--eliminating the need for you to worry about stamping or drawing perfectly on your pieces. I hope this helps you to make super cute faces for your projects!
I'm using these two cutie pies I designed on a layout for my boys--we have some pics of them picking and eating fruit, and a pic of my oldest with my uncle AC who passed away. My uncle AC always owned a huge citrus farm--and this will perfect for us to scrap his picture, and for my boys to remember him for the SWEET man he was!

LEMONADE KISS

The files I used are called Orange You Sweet and Lemonade Kiss. The files are in ALL formats---and include the faces for you to draw in your program and then immediately cut out with your digital die cutter.

I hope this helps you and you enjoyed my super cute projects! If you did, leave me a comment, and I'll enter you in the drawing of the FREE Basketball Cricut Cartridge!

PS I found the leaf---guess where it was? under my laptop!!! hahahah!

Orange You Sweet (Purchase $1.99)

Lemonade Kiss (Purchase $1.99)

Kits and finished pieces are available. *Kits--all pieces are cut and doodled, all you have to do is assemble with the step by step guide* Finished pieces are inked, assembled, and decorated beautifully. Please email me for additional information on kits and finished pieces.

You can see all my original designs In my Store

REMEMBER: my webcam is built into my laptop--so it shoots mirror images--images are not really backward--my webcam just makes them appear that way.

Quick Post: Hello Kitty Card Video Tut

Hello Kitty peeking out from behind a cloud
Okay if you are TOTALLY bored and have nothing better to do, you can watch a quick video I made. My niece who just turned 2 is going to preschool next week--and she is sooooooooooooooooooo excited! She is a spunky girly girl! She will absolutely LOVE this card. She loves to receive mail from Aunt Kissy and Jo Jo!
Here is the finished card--all made using the Hello Kitty Cricut Cartridge. I bought this cartridge last year after my trip to Japan. Hello Kitty was EVERYWHERE--they even have a HUGE Hello Kitty store where I bought things for my favorite cousin Tiffany and niece Amelie!
I added 2 paws to Hello Kitty (off the same cart) so she is peeking out over the rainbow. In retrospect, I should have made the card a bit bigger so I could ahve shown off the rainbow behind Kitty better--but she will be able to see it beautifully when she opens the card to read her note from Aunt Kissy.
PS Sorry the pic is so bad--I just can't get a good pic late at night!

PSS I am wearing a coat--and I dont' know why--but I always only button the TOP one--never the rest--so go figure!

Tutorial: Quick Project: Night Owl Crafting, Review: Banana Leaf Paper

I was in my LSS, and I saw some banana leaf paper. I absolutely have a HUGE obsession over paper--especially new types of paper. This is because I'm a paper piecer, and love textured papers that can give my piecings dimension. So I picked up this banana leaf paper.
The banana leaf paper comes in a few different colors--the one I chose is a dark brown called "Rugged". It tends to look like dark brown wood/bamboo! I picked it up for this reason--thinking it would make a great "tree" or branch paper piecing.
The 12x12 paper is banana leaf on one side and fusible webbing on the other...which makes it impossible to cut with a digital cutter. I tried! It splintered and made quite a mess! However, it is absolutely BRILLIANT to cut with scissors--and gives a truly wood "feel" as well as look!
It is by Creative Imaginations, made in the Phillipines, 12 x 12, and comes in a few different colors. There were about 6 colors that I saw--but I felt like brown was my best bet--I couldn't really get excited over green or blue "woodsy" paper! It retails anywhere between 1.99 and 2.99 per sheet.
Make sure to leave me a comment and I'll choose a follower who comments to receive a 6x6 sample of this Rugged Banana Leaf paper--just enough for a great paper piecing or sign!
I give this product a 9 out of 10 for quality, and 7 out of 10 for ease of use (just because I couldn't use my cricut to cut--as it splinters), and a 10 out of 10 for uniqueness. Would I buy this again? Absolutely!!!! It gives the look and feel of exotic wood for my projects--just like my sign that you see above, and below in my video!
If you enjoyed my "owl"some adventure today--(hahah) leave me a comment--it so brightens my day & night! I'll also send ONE follower who commented a banana leaf paper sample, and ONE follower this owl file FREE!

Owl can be purchased in my Store: K Andrew Designs

Tutorial: Quick Project: School Days Journaling Spot

Quick Update: Here's my finished page for the Challenge!

HI everyone! This week I'm hosting the Sketch Challenge at Visual Designs by Chris--so I wanted to do a quick tutorial of the FREE cut-file that I created for this challenge! If you want to grab this file for FREE--head on over to VDBC at the forum, register, and then PM me at the forum (send me a private message--or you can just reply to the challenge thread ) with your email address and desired format (svg, scal, knk, wpc, ai, eps, gsd). Then all you have to do is create something cute using the file and sketch from Becky Fleck's Page Map that is posted for you! If you do, I'll have a GIFT for you at the end of the challenge!
Here's a quick peek at the file, and the page map for the challenge! The VIDEO is at the bottom of the post!

School File: (Purchase)
You may see all my files here at my store: K Andrew Designs
Don't forget to leave me a comment, it brightens my day right to the core! **I'll choose one follower who comments to receive a finished journaling spot for FREE!** Don't forget each comment counts toward the FREE cricut basketball cart!

NOTE: the doodling in the video appears backwards because my webcam is built into my laptop--but in real life it is not!!

***The REST of the Story*** My son was telling us about the Cone of Shame. I could not figure out what exactly he was speaking about--till it hit me! The dunce cap! He said oh I hope I don't have to wear the Cone of Shame in school. Then I remembered he had finished reading Matilda by Roald Dahl, and in the book the headmaster is horribly cruel to the children. LOL. I explained I'm sure he would not have to wear the "cone of shame"--that he was brilliant, and as long as he remembered to be kind to his teacher and classmates, work quietly, stay on task--he should have no problem. He said, well mama, there is a chance that I might have to wear it, but I'm sure going to try hard not to have to wear it!*****

August Grab Bag: Back to School--Game On!

I love grab bags period--there's something exciting about getting products 80%+ of what they retail for. I think that's the bargain hunter in me! This month, I especially LOVE. My boys LOVE LOVE video gaming (when I let them on the weekeneds--when we are not camping).....so my contribution is ALL TECHIE!!! I can't wait for the reveal on the 15'th to show you! You are going to flip!
So if you want to get your game on and get ready for school--CLICK HERE--to check out the grab bag for only 7.00! I know that I did 3 file sets which has several piecings per set--and the rest of the girls did too! So it's a BIG set.

Quick Post: NIS The Mad Hatter cutting file

HI everyone! As you know I give away a free file every 2 weeks with purchase of my cutting files. This month I'm giving away an entire set! 5 pc set--and it's SUPER fast to piece. Hallelujah! I think there are only 9 pieces total on the Hatter himself--and as you can see the detail is awesome!
My boys and I love to read, we love the book by Lewis Carrol, and we always think we are a bit "odd"--so the hatter fits us perfectly!!!

Thanks for looking--and this set is FREE with any $3.00 purchase from Kandrewdesigns!

Leave me a comment, and one follower who comments will receive this file for FREE!!!

All the best-from my hands to yours-
KAndrew
